Eastbourne – Camilla’s Bookshop

During our stay in Eastbourne we explored the surroundings of our B&B on the way to the nearby centre of the city. So we came to Grove Road, which leads directly to the main station. That’s when I saw Camilla’s Bookshop.

Oh, an antiquarian bookstore! As a bibliophile, nothing could stop me. But I had no idea what would await me inside the house…
When I entered Camilla’s a „Wow!“ came out of my mouth involuntarily. I had never seen so many books in such a crowded room.

My next „Wow!“ followed immediatedly and was dedicated to the parrot, which stood in its cage on one of the numerous stacks of books directly at the entrance. Archie is the name of the animal, I learned, and he is always present in the shop on Tuesdays and Fridays to the delight of regular customers and casual visitors like me. When he is in a good mood, he parries eloquently and entertains all listeners very well.

Back to the books. I could hardly believe their pure number, and the camera in my jacket pocket urged me to finally take pictures. Since I am a correct person, I asked the man behind the cash register, if he probably would allow me to take pictures… and if he would mind me writing about his bookshop on my internet blog…
What I had not expected at all was the enthusiasm with which this person, who turned out to be Camilla’s husband, Stuart, not only gave me his permission, but was even excited that I wanted to write about his bookshop. He made my camera and me happy.

While we were talking, Stuart willingly told me a few things about his shop:
About 1 million books can be found on the three floors of the antiquarian bookshop. They are sorted according to the classic criteria. First Camilla and Stuart ran a store in Brighton. However, as the environment changed unfavorably for them over time, the two moved to Eastbourne with their treasures. There – and this surprised me as well – business is going quite well. The old books, CDs and DVDs really don’t cost much, but the quantity does bring it then nevertheless. There are loyal regular customers and occasional customers like me, but there are also groups of language students, for example – and everyone buys a piece. Stuart seemed to be quite content.

Untergeschoss. Unfassbar voll.

Basement. Unbelievably full. Through some passages you could only walk if you moved sideways.

Back in the ground floor. In the background between the books you can see Camilla.

Behind the cash desk a staircase leads to the upper floor.

The large room on the upper floor is of course also filled to the last inch with books. The candlestick on the ceiling is beautiful.

Goodbye, Camilla, Stuart and of course Archie. I wish you many customers – and all book lovers can only be recommended to go on a treasure hunt in Camilla’s Bookshop.
